About Us
We are a world-class lure & bait company that produces top-quality products.
My name is Reilee Helms, and I am the owner of Western Cats Inc. I love the sport of trapping, and I live and trap in Southern Utah. In 2012, I bought my father’s lure recipes (on paper) after begging him relentlessly.
My dad, Robert Helms, was a long-line trapper trained by Ray Milligan back in the 1980s. He began building his lures during that time, and has continued doing so since then. During one trapping season, I asked him why he never started a lure company. He replied that he was always too busy. Then, I asked him if I could sell them, and although reluctant, he agreed on the condition that I stick with it for at least five years, no matter what happens.
My dad’s lures and baits are remarkable. They have caught hundreds of coyotes for him personally, with KANEKILLER LRC alone yielding 279 coyotes in 15 days. He has also caught an abundance of bobcats and grey fox. He knows how to create top-quality lures and baits that work under harsh conditions and keep working over time.
Although I am still relatively inexperienced in this business, I am learning quickly and growing by leaps and bounds. My primary objective in taking on this challenge was to get more young people interested in trapping. Having grown up in this trapping environment, I want to provide similar opportunities to other kids, who will undoubtedly fall in love with it, given the chance to go checking traps at least once. Trapping is a sport that we want to preserve, and businesses like ours will disappear unless we get more young people involved in it.
While there are already lots of great lure companies out there, we believe that there is still room for improvement and innovation. At Western Cats Inc., we strive to be the best we can be and focus on customer satisfaction.
Your questions answered
Common Questions
Do you carry a powerful call lure?
- Yes! Try SKUNK GEL, it is loud and won’t wash away in wet weather.
What is your best lure combination for the walk-through set?
- We personally use KANEKILLER LRC and COMMANDOR GLANDOR.
When you re-lure do you use the same lure again?
- No, we actually use THUNDERCAT. It is a powerful liquid lure that comes in a 8oz squeeze bottle with a twist top lid.
How many sets can I make with a 4oz bottle of lure?
- You should get between 50 – 60 sets depending on how much you use.
I have never used WCI lures before, what one lure should I try?
- By far our most popular and most widely used lure is KANEKILLER LRC.
How often should I re-lure?
- Our recommendation to achieve the best results is every 7 days.
How long will your lures last on my shelf?
- They will last 10+ years if stored in a cool location out of direct sunlight.
How much lure should I use at each set?
- We use about a lima bean size amount of lure at each of our sets.
I have "shy" coyotes in my area, what lure should I use?
- Try PAYDIRT, this lure is made from mink and rat glands. It is not overbearing and will attract those shy coyotes.
When it is super cold out will your lures still work?
- Absolutely! You might try adding SKUNK GEL about 6 feet high in a tree above your set. This will get your call lure out there, then they will find your set as they get closer.
Is it really worth the money to attend your bobcat clinic?
- We say YES! Your $300 investment is the value of a fairly nice western bobcat. If you catch just one extra cat per season because of the knowledge you gained at our clinic you have received and excellent return on your investment.
